From the Desk of Sr. Ruth Ann

July, 2014

Sr. Ruth Ann"Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations; for what has been achieved we give you thanks, for the work that still remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God, forever and ever."

        Collect from Independence Day

As we celebrate Independence Day we may ask a question rising from the collect from the Fourth of July liturgy. How do we do the work that still remains to make our nation and the world a better place for all people? Independence Day is about more than freedom and being independent. It is also about bringing Jesus' peace into the world. Jesus gave the disciples His peace and He also wants us to have this wonderful gift and to pass it on. The song, Let There Be Peace On Earth, reminds us that more than anything we are to desire peace for the whole world. And, more importantly this peace begins with me! How do we cultivate this peace, this gift so we can give it to others and to the world?

In the quiet taking time for prayer and meditation each day with God will deepen our own peace and strengthen us to be able to be people of peace and to freely give this peace to others. Jesus came for all people, but especially for the poor, our brothers and sisters who are oppressed, immigrants, refugees and marginalized. God's call to us is to be in solidarity with and for the world's outcasts. It is a huge challenge to embrace our brothers and sisters whom society rejects.

We are people of freedom and in this freedom we are called to take a look at the deeper significance of this special holiday. May we celebrate too the wonder of being a blessing to others and sharing Jesus' peace.
