White Coat Reflections

July, 2014

White Coat ReflectionsThis past Sunday we heard in the Gospel reading, “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest….” In these past few weeks, we have encountered at the free clinic so many who are burdened and in need of “rest” and care. We are seeing more and more patients with serious medical problems who are finding themselves literally desparate for medical care - - patients with recent strokes, those with clotting disorders causing blood clots in their legs and lungs, those with a new diagnosis of cancer, some with recent heart attacks…and they are without health insurance. It is their desperation, and even their tears, especially on the phone with their initial contact with our office, that really tears at your heart. I heard our nurse yesterday on the phone setting up an appointment with just such a desparate person, and she kept saying “Don’t worry, don’t cry, we’ll figure something out.” She put the person on hold and said, “We have to find a way to get this person to the clinic. They have to be seen and they have no transportation.” (Their condition was life threatening if they didn’t receive their medications, which they could not afford once they lost their insurance.). Thankfully, our Anawim Community has a multitude of ministries that reach out to those in need. I told her to call Sr. Suzanne or Charlie at Young People Who Care and she was able to arrange a ride.

This encounter was a living example of “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest.” As we strive to live out the Gospel message, we look to Jesus - - he was always lifting the burdens of the poor, the sick, those searching for forgiveness. As we reflect this week on how we can be more like Jesus, what burden can we help remove from our neighbor who labors? How can we give rest to those who desperately need such rest and such care? May we each take the time daily to spend in prayer with Jesus that we, too, may find the rest He promises.
